Metal Pipe & Hollow Tube Calculator
OD: Outer Diameter of the pipe.
WT: Wall Thickness of the metal tube.
ID: Inner Diameter = Outer Diameter - (2 × Wall Thickness).
How This Calculator Works
The theoretical weight of a hollow metal pipe is computed by subtracting the inner cylinder volume from the outer cylinder volume, then multiplying by the material density.
* Standard formula for Carbon Steel Pipes: Weight (kg/m) = (OD - WT) × WT × 0.02466 (where OD and WT are in mm).
Metal Density Reference
| Material | Density (g/cm³) |
|---|---|
| Mild Steel / Carbon Steel | 7.85 |
| Stainless Steel (304/316) | 8.00 |
| Aluminium | 2.70 |
| Brass | 8.50 |
| Copper | 8.96 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Manufacturing rolling tolerances (±5% to 10%), mill scales, internal seam welds, and slight alloy composition variations affect actual physical scale weight.
Pipes are specified by Nominal Bore (internal capacity) and Wall Schedule, whereas tubes are designated by precise Outer Diameter (OD) and Wall Thickness (WT).
